Default Marlins draw first blood..OR NOT

Quote:
The Marlins have acquired Jacque Jones from the Cubs, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
No word yet on what the Marlins got back, but it won't be much. The Cubs are likely covering a large portion of the roughly $9 million Jones is owed through 2008. It's still a nice pickup for Florida. Jones isn't a great defender in center, but he can handle the position and he will start hitting. To pick up such a solid stopgap at what is almost surely very little cost is a nice feat for GM Larry Beinfest. Jun. 26 - 5:53 pm et

Could have just sent us Cabrera for Milledge. See, that's not so hard now is it?

Jacque Jones-OF-Cubs Jun. 26 - 7:43 pm et

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports that the Jacque Jones-to-Florida deal won't happen, "barring an unexpected reversal."
The Marlins wanted Jones as their primary center fielder, but apparentely the Cubs were quite desperate enough to get rid of him. Either they refused to pay the majority of the $7 million he's still owed or they wanted a better prospect in return if they were going to eat the salary.

That's a hell of a lot of payroll for a scrub. Imagine if Jones where a Marlin in 2008, but Willis and/or Cabrera weren't?
