Default Is it too early to call the Alou signing a bust..

After seeing the video of the guy running the bases yesterday, it is highly unlikely that he will be ready anytime soon. If it's not the quad with this guy..it'll be the knee. I like his batting average in the lineup and productivity but at this point, Floyd seems like he would have been a better option. I know Floyd is no longer a starter, but the game has not even been on the DL once thus far.

Hindsight is indeed 20-20, but with all of our OF injury woes thus far, the slow return of Alou from the DL is putting this deal under greater scrutiny.

The very though of Ricky Ledee in the OF again has prompted this post.

Ok, you've been drinking.

But I actually think it is too late to call the Alou signing a bust. It was a huge gamble on ink day. But the Chavez injury, after the Green injury, after the Milledge injury.

I think it was fair to say the Mets had comfortable depth to play with. Outfield is voodoo (a trap at Shea)

It was one year, 8 mil in an inflated market. Worth the cost and the risk.

Floyd and Alou have almost identical stats this year.

Alou: 110 ABs, .318 AVG, 2 HR, 13 RBI & .819 OPS
Floyd: 110 ABs, .309 AVG, 3 HR, 23 RBI & .794 OPS

I'm not ready to proclaim the signing a bust since it's a long season and he still has a chance to prove his worth, especially in the post season. But, so far the worst thing about the deal is giving up this years draft pick for him.

Cant be called a bust when a DL stint was expected to happen at some point.

the logic was there is probably as much chance as supplemental picks 42 and 47 being equal to 29 in terms of the draft.

What do you consider a bust? The Mets knew they were signing a dude who spends a ton of time on the DL.

When he's not hurt, he'll produce.

I think it's too early.

If Porcello falls to the Yankees I will curse Alou's name for a long, long time...

Given Peterson's beliefs about HS pitchers and the amount of innings it takes for them to develop it might not have made a difference for the Mets anyway.

Maybe, but I would hope having starters/potential starters under the age of 30 (Perez, Maine, Pelfrey, Humber, Vargas, Mulvey) would help him make exceptions. It was basically Leiter and the old guys when he got here...

Funny though. There are people on Sickels' site checking Porcello's facebook page constantly. Apparently it says UNC '11, so he's guaranteed to go to Chapel Hill, or positioning himself and Boras for an enormous payday...

It's way too early to tell, but I am concerned about the number of injury prone veterans on this team (El Duque, Alou, Green, Valentin)

I just heard on the FAN that Alou may not even be close to coming back next week either. This sucks!! If we're lucky then the guy is going to end up playing 2/3 of the season. If that turn out to be the case then the real value Alou's contract for the season would be $11.2 million. Unless, he comes off the DL soon this is sounding more like a bust to me.

I said late July, and was "laughed at" (in text)... I have a feeling Pedro will be back on the field before Alou. The guy is a rope bridge during rush hour.
