actually I think they've been playing like a first-place team for a few weeks now. it hasn't been pretty, but they've been winning, which is the bottom line.
I think what gets people is the omnipresent sense that something is missing. maybe they're not winning quite enough, or doing all of the little things, or that they haven't really gone on a hot streak this year (what's their biggest winning streak? four? and that was the first four games of the season?). or all of it.
