You're right about next year. Only if Beltran moves to #2 would #5 be open. With Alou and Green most likely gone after this season, it'd have to be Wright or Beltran at #5. If trades or FA signings come into play, things would change, but with the current roster I'd go with:
Reyes
Castillo
Beltran (or Wright)
Delgado
Wright (or Beltran)
Milledge
Catcher
Gomez
As for the "wouldabeens", that's all speculation. We have no real way of knowing how Milledge might've responded to the pressure of being Wright's "protection". I'm inclined to agree with you, but it's just a guess.
