| Triple AAA team in Syracuse? Schumer makes pitch for Chiefs-Mets deal Quote:
U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer visited the state Fair on Saturday and stated his intention to persuade New York Mets owner Fred Wilpon, to affiliate with the Syracuse Chiefs.
"I'm going to do everything I can to encourage the Mets and Mr. Wilpon to link up with the Chiefs," Schumer said. He hinted the deal could rest with Chiefs' stockholders.
"Many major league owners like to have an ownership share in the minor league team," said Schumer. "A municipally owned team with a whole lot of shareholders would make it very logical for the Mets and the Chiefs to link up."
The Chiefs' roughly 16,000 shares are owned by some 4,000 stockholders. The team's 31-year relationship with the Toronto Blue Jays could end this season, when the Chiefs' contract with Toronto expires. The Chiefs have had losing seasons 22 of the last 30, and stockholders are anxious for a new partner.
Under baseball rules, major and minor league teams can't officially express intentions to affiliate until Sept. 2, and can't begin negotiating until Sept 16
