Default Serious Bonds Discussion

We have several threads going on either the merits of signing Bonds, Bonds joining the cast of a 1970's/80's TV show, and a thread about viable outfield options. Lets put all the cards on the table:

What do you consider a viable option for the OF and at what cost do you go for it? I see names like Jay Payton for crying out loud....is he any better than what we have and haven't we gone down that incredibly frustrating road already? Guys like Ibanez and Holiday are intriguing, but we have already depleated our farm system of any talent that could be used in a trade other then F. Martinez. To acquire a big bat like Holiday we would most certainly have to include Pelfrey and Heilman in any deal...and they are finally pitching with consistency, so I don't want to lose them nor do I think we can afford to lose them. Any trade that would cost less than those chips would only net a half year rental, which is exactly what Ibanez (at age 37) would be.

So we are faced with the option of losing valuable, young arms in Pelfrey and/or Heilman + our only minor league talent to acquire an OF that may only be a rental? The most interesting part of this quandary is that during the off-season, better OF options will be available in Adam Dunn and Pat Burrell.

So the question is what direction do you move in. Well here are the options as I see them:

Try to package a deal with Colorado - Holiday for Pelfrey F. Martinez and Heilman. See if they bite, but I am sure a better offer is out there.

Try to package a deal with Seatle for Ibanez, but I would imagine that it would take at least F. Martinez, possibly more, for the 37 year old half season rental.

Hope Alou comes back and doesn't get hurt again. Unlikely

Hope Church is OK. Unlikely

Continue to rotate in Tatis, Anderson, and random AAA call up hoping to catch lightning in a bottle.

Or....

Sign the most prolific Home Run Hitter in baseball history for nothing.

OK, that is a little over the top...how about this:
sign a still serviceable LF who can bat clean up, hit 20 HR's in half a season and have an OBP close to or exceeding .500...who BTW will also make the Mets line up more flexible by displacing Beltran from the #4 slot, and make the hitters around see better pitches. And the kicker is not only does this guy bat LH, so if Alou does come back he can stay healthy by doing a little platooning, but this guy is willing to play for the league minimum at a half season (which, if Bonds is signed today and takes 2 weeks to get into playing mode would cost an estimated $170,000 dollars) AND it does not cost you one prospect.

I just makes too much sense to me to sign Bonds.

The parachute here is that if it doesn't work out...release him. What do you care? ML minimum.
