As Adam Rubin reported today, Bernazard is tight with Jeff Wilpon and has emerged as a candidate to replace Omar Minaya. As COO of the organization, Jeff Wilpon is directly responsible for everything that has taken place over the last couple of years. Period. He's running the show — and letting him off the hook and dumping all of the blame on Bernazard is uninformed, and frankly screams of the writer in question donning the knee pads.
One must look at the patterns in the Mets' front office, the history. Whether it was Steve Phillips undermining Bobby Valentine, the Al Goldis fiasco or the current new round of internal warfare and leaks (and I agree that the leaker is not Jeff Wilpon), this pattern forces any rational thinking person to see beyond buying into the "villian of the month" and see that at the end of the day, all of this chaos falls in the lap of the Wilpons...and while Jeff is fairly bright and made some good moves, he's also shown some failings as a manager in the corporate sense.
While I refuse to kill the guy for being "the owner's idiot son" as he's been wrongly described in some media quarters, because he is a bright guy who grew up in baseball and certainly deserves to be working in he game, I'm not willing to fellate him and suggest that he's an innocent victim, either. |
