They're really not paying Castillo that much money... that said, the Mets would never eat that ~$18m remaining on his deal, and he'd never accept a bench role (at least, I don't think). Sadly, I think we're stuck with him.
My more realistic hopes for changes in next year's lineup are...
1) Carp at 1B (though Tex is a great player, and if Carp weren't making himself into a cheap young solution, I'd say the Mets should go after him)
2) Castro starting behind the plate (which they'd need to get going on
now, by which I mean they should see what they can get for Schneider, who's just awful), and...
3) Burrell in LF (even disregarding his monster walk year, he makes sense on a lot of levels).
