Sarah and Emily Hughes See Their Favorite Team

FLUSHING, NY – After winning a gold medal in 2002 and having her sister Emily go the Olympics this year, what does Sarah Hughes do on her 21st birthday? Go to a Met game, of course. The figure skating sisters were at the Mets 6-2 loss against the Nationals on Tuesday, but for them, this is a normal occurrence. “We are Mets fans; we have season tickets,” Sarah said. “Today we got a suite and there are tons of booze in there.” But that’s not to say she will celebrate her first legal night boozing it up. Emily doesn’t have a license. The Hughes family was on the field before the game and met some of their favorite players including David Wright, whom Sarah participated with for a segment on her television episode last year. “For my skating special, David taught me how to hit a [baseball],” Sarah said. “I wasn’t very good at it, my friends said I was so bad.”
«FULL STORY» White Blindness: The Winter Olympics and Defending Bryant Gumbel
by: Dave Zirin | SportsFan Magazine | Wednesday, March 1, 2006
The right-wing media hordes, in a mad dash to deflect attention from Dick Cheney's shooting spree, may have found their target of mass distraction: Bryant Gumbel. At the end of his HBO show "Real Sports," Gumbel unleashed a prolonged rant about the utter unwatchability of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino. The Winter Games certainly are a worthy target. On ten-hour tape delay, NBC has been force-feeding us highlights of sports that seem concocted on Madison Avenue to sell Mountain Dew. As Gumbel took the Xtreme winter games to task, he said, "So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world's greatest athletes, despite a paucity of Blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention." Immediately, and predictably, the bloviating bigots of the blogosphere started splattering Gumbel's statement all over the web.
