Tides Drop Game One, 6-5
by: the Norfolk Tides | Press Release | Thursday, September 8, 2005
Marcus Thames homered and drove in three runs, powering the Toledo Mud Hens to a 6-5 win over the Norfolk Tides in game one of the first round of the Governors' Cup Playoffs.
With the score tied 5-5 in the 7th inning, Thames connected for a go-ahead sacrifice fly off of Norfolk reliever Jeremy Hill, putting the Mud Hens up 6-5. The Tides would mount a rally in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Toledo closer Jason Karnuth retired Chase Lambin with runners on first and second to give the Mud Hens a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series.
Norfolk jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but Toledo answered back on a two-run home run by Thames in the third inning off of Tides starter Eric Junge (0-1).
The Mud Hens plated two unearned runs in the top of the 4th inning to take a 4-1 lead, but the Tides would storm back in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead.
With one out, Ron Calloway and Chris Basak hit back-to-back singles, and both came around to score on a double into the right-center field gap by Tides catcher Joe Hietpas. Angel Pagan then followed with one of his three hits in the game, doubling home Hietpas to tie the score at 4-4. After a groundout moved Pagan to third, Eric Valent lined a single to center to give the Tides a 5-4 lead.
The Mud Hens would tie the score in the 5th inning on an RBI single by Mike Hessman.
Corey Hamman (1-0) earned the win in relief for Toledo, hurling 2.2 innings of no-hit relief. The left-hander was making his Triple-A debut after being promoted from Double-A Erie earlier in the day.
The Tides and Mud Hens square off in game two of their series, with first pitch from Harbor Park slated for 6:15 p.m. Right hander Yusmeiro Petit is scheduled to start for Norfolk, while Toledo counters with right-hander Joel Zumaya.
