Phantoms Wear Down Weary Tigers

BRIDGEPORT, CT - The Philadelphia Phantoms caught the red-hot Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the right time.

Phantoms center Matt Davis scored two goals and added an assist as the Philadelphia Phantoms soundly defeated the Sound Tigers 4-1 in front of 2,783 fans at the Arena at Harbor Yard and snapped Bridgeport's franchise-best nine game home winning streak.

Last night's game was the Sound Tigers fifth in sixth nights, and their on ice efforts showed it. Sound Tigers captain Mark Wotton thought that the scheduling shouldn't have affected the teams play, "We let one get away. Sure we've had a lot of games in a lot of nights, but to me that's just an excuse."

The Tigers looked slow and flat-footed, their passes weren't connecting and their turnovers were costly. "There were times where our turnovers cost us," added Wotton. "It cost us three goals tonight, and that's something we can eliminate even if we are tired."

Matt Davis started the scoring off for the Phantoms late in the first period while on the penalty kill, and it was all thanks to a huge hut by Triston Grant on the Tigers Tomas Malec. Malec had lost his stick on the previous play and in an attempt to keep the puck in his zone, tried to kick the puck back. While kicking, he met Grant's big 6'2" frame and fell to the ice. Davis picked the puck up and led a 2-on-1 rush with Jamie Fraser as the lone Sound Tigers defensemen. As Fraser dover to block an oncoming pass, Davis toe-dragged the puck around the sliding defenseman, drew Bridgeport goaltender Wade Dubielewicz down and roofed the puck into the Sound Tigers cage for the 1-0 lead.

The Phantoms made it 2-0 when John Slaney scored his 4th of the year. Slaney capitalized on a Bridgeport defensive breakdown and was able to slip in between four Sound Tigers defensemen, backhanding his own rebound past Dubielewicz. Philadelphia extended its lead to three as Bridgeport-native Pete Zingoni deflected a Matt Davis centering pass through Dubielewicz's legs.

"It's always fun to come home," said Zingoni, who received second star accolades last night in front of friends and family. "I didn't expect it, but it was nice," Zingoni said. "It was a chance to show some appreciation for everyone who helped along the way...It was pretty special to have them all there, because I owe a lot to them."

The Tigers made their only dent in the scoreboard at the 16:53 mark, as Tomas Malec scored his second of the season, firing a wrist shot through a maze of bodies and past Philadelphia goalie Scott Munroe. Matt Davis finished out the scoring for the Phantoms just under two minutes later after taking a nice behind the back, through-the-legs pass from Matt Ellison.

The Sound Tigers have a three-in-three staring them in the face as they complete a stretch of eight games in ten nights as they face-off with the Albany River Rats in another critical game in the playoff standings. Face-off time at the Times Union Center is 7:00pm.
