Straka's Trick Powers Rangers Over Isles, 5-1

In their game against the Islanders on Wednesday, coach Tom Renney decided to switch things up on the top lines and flip-flop Petr Prucha and Martin Straka.
It was a no-brainer for the Rangers bench minder, because in their first five games against their rivals from out east, with Straka playing with Jaromir Jagr and Michael Nylander, the top line combined for 11 goals and 19 assists.
And this was no different as Straka came up with the natural hat trick combined with Jagr’s four assists, which saw the Rangers cruise to a 5-1 win at the Nassau Coliseum.
“We had a lot of chances," Jagr said to reporters in Uniondale. "Sometimes it might look easy like tonight and other times it's really tough. That's just hockey."
Those opportunities also allowed Jagr to shatter Jean Ratelle’s 1971-72 mark of 109 points in a season by a Ranger. No. 68 now has 113 and still going strong.
"It's a big honor for me," Jagr said in the same sitting. "I'm glad I did it in the first period. ... We need the points. We want to stay in first in the division."
The Rangers now have 94 points, which is four ahead of Philadelphia. And no matter the outcome would have stayed on top of the Atlantic, since the Flyers were off, but they do now have a game in hand.
This happened due to the terrific top line, which took command in the first period beating Rick DiPietro [17 saves] three times. After a Prucha power play goal, his 29th, opened the scoring at 7:23, Straka took over with two side shot goals, the second one caught the Islander goalie looking the other way.
And it didn’t just surprise DiPietro.
“Marty never goes to the net,” Jagr laughed to Alan Hahn of Newsday.
Then at 12:14 of the second, it looked like Jagr broke the goals scoring record when his patented slap shot beat DiPietro, but as chants of ‘M-V-P’ went up for the Hart Trophy candidate from the Ranger fans in the crowd, replays showed the puck deflected off of Straka, which gave him the hat trick, but because of the delay, no hats were thrown.
That didn’t matter as the 4-0 lead was enough for Henrik Lundqvist, who stopped 18 of 19 shots on the night to gain his 30th win on the year to break Johnny Bower’s and Jim Henry’s Rangers rookie record for wins by a goalie.
“It's a big number for me, especially in my first season," Lundqvist said to reporters. "The whole team played a great game."
They did indeed.
Notes: Of the Rangers last nine games, six of them are against the Flyers, Islanders and Ottawa Senators…The 94 points by a Ranger team is the seventh best point total in team history, tying then with the 1973-74 club…Ryan Hollweg returned from his three game suspension and Darius Kasparaitis came back from his right groin injury…Jagr extended his points streak to 10 games. He has nine goals and 12 assists during the run
