BROOKLYN, NY - Winning their last five games and outscoring their opponents 46-12 during that span, the Brooklyn Cyclones have continued to destroy whatever stands in their way.

Tonight was no different.

After getting another quality start from Dylan Owen and more clutch-hitting from Jason Jacobs and company, the Cyclones gave the Cross Cutters splinters all night, inducing a well-executed, two-hit, 3-0 win.

After taking Todd Privett’s spot in the Brooklyn rotation after one appearance in relief during the first week of the season, Owen has gone 2-0 with a 2.29 ERA and only three walks in 19.2 innings, cementing his place on the pitching staff in the process. Looking for his fourth win of the season, Owen continued to dominate on the mound, giving up only two hits in 5.2 innings of work and striking out seven in another stellar performance.

“Owen pitched outstanding and was hitting all of his spots,” said Cyclones manager Edgar Alfonzo. “The defense controlled the game and the offense was solid. They all played a good game.”

However, despite another shutdown start from Owen, Williamsport starter Chance Chapman would stifle the Mets Single-A affiliate until the bottom of the fourth, when a Jason Jacobs double would score Raul Reyes and give the ‘Clones a 1-0 lead. Keeping the offense coming in the fourth, left fielder Lucas Duda continued to swing a hot bat [.364 in his last 10 games] and stroked a RBI single that scored Jacobs, putting Brooklyn up 2-0.

Unlike most of their games at home this season, the Mets Single-A affiliate wouldn’t be forced to come from behind and wouldn’t need any late inning heroics, as two runs would be more than enough to send the Cutters home empty handed.

“This team is clicking on all cylinders right now,” said Duda. “Hopefully we can keep it up.”

Getting the offense needed to come up with a win and playing excellent defense to boot, Owen and the Cyclones looked like they would be coasting to an easy victory when the fourth was over.

“I was able to throw all of my pitches today and had great defense behind me,” said Owen. “That always makes things much easier out there.”

Keeping the Cross Cutters offense silent through 5.2 innings, before being replaced by Dan McDonald, Owen left in position to get his fifth win of the season and McDonald would keep it that way. Making it easier for McDonald however was Jefferies Tatford, who would smack a RBI double in the seventh that would add to the Cyclones and put the game away at 3-0.

However, the real story of the late innings was the work of McDonald.

Keeping the Phillies Single-A affiliate at bay with a hearty helping of fastballs and changeups, McDonald kept the Cutters offense flaccid until the eighth. Closer Stephen Clyne would then come into the game in the ninth and keep Williamsport scoreless despite giving up a walk, securing a 3-0 Brooklyn victory.

Now with a 22-7 record, the Cyclones have the best record in franchise history after 29 games and are coasting through whatever obstacles that present themselves. Eager to make sure the winning streak continues, the young Cyclones believe that they are they hardest working team in the league and will do whatever it takes to continue winning.

“We definitely want to keep this going,” said Owen. “We want to keep the fans in Brooklyn happy.”
