Phillies Avoid Sweep With 5-3 Victory Over N.Y.

Mike Pelfrey’s stay with Triple-A New Orleans ended after 6 1/2 weeks.

What didn’t end was a losing streak that has now stretched to seven games across two seasons.

Rookie Kyle Kendrick limited New York’s scorching offense to two runs over 6 2/3 innings as Philadelphia salvaged the finale of their four-game set with a 5-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park.

Jimmy Rollins clubbed a two-run homer and Shane Victorino also went deep for the Phillies, who defeated the Mets at home for the first time in six tries this season.

Carlos Delgado collected two hits, including his 13th home run, while Paul Lo Duca and Ruben Gotay had RBI singles for New York, who lost for just the second time in 10 games.

New York opened the scoring in the first when Jose Reyes singled, stole his 40th base and came around to score on Lo Duca’s basehit to left.

Philadelphia would answer in the bottom of the second after there were two outs and nobody on.

Pelfrey (0-6) retired the first five batters, striking out two, but a four-pitch walk put Pat Burrell on first and Greg Dobbs made him pay, doubling to right-center to tie the game, 1-1.

More trouble found the 6-7 right-hander in the third.

Kendrick reached safely on David Wright’s throwing error and Rollins followed with his 14th home run of the season, giving the Phillies their first lead of the series, 3-1.

Pelfrey would work his way into more trouble by loading the bases on two walks and a single, but retired Dobbs on a liner to center for the final out.

The 23-year-old pitched two strong innings to close out his afternoon after five frames having allowed three runs – two earned – and four hits while walking three and fanning three.

Delgado (2-for-3, HR) blasted his second home run of the series leading off the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2, but New York would get no closer off Kendrick (3-0), who won his third straight start.

The right-hander scattered six hits while walking three without striking out a batter and was helped by three double plays.

Victorino (3-for-4, HR, 2 SB) belted his ninth home run with two outs in the seventh off Aaron Heilman, who proceeded to allow a triple to Chase Utley, an intentional walk to Ryan Howard and a run-scoring single to Aaron Rowand which increased the deficit to three.

Gotay’s pinch-hit RBI single off Antonio Alfonseca plated Delgado to cut the lead to 5-3, but the Phils’ closer retired pinch-hitter Julio Franco on a grounder to second to end the game.

Despite the loss, the Mets (46-34) will head to the Mile High City feeling good about themselves with an 8-2 record in their last 10 games. Tom Glavine (7-5, 4.12) will get the call in the opener against Colorado as he goes for his third straight win and career victory No. 298. After struggling over a five-start stretch, the left-hander has bounced back in his last two, allowing just one run over 14 innings (0.64 ERA) in victories over Oakland and St. Louis. Glavine owns an 11-5 mark along with a 2.88 ERA in 27 career starts against Colorado, though this is his first since 2005.

After finishing off a sweep of the Yankees from June 19-21 to run their winning streak to six, the Rockies (39-43) have collapsed, losing nine-of-10, including eight straight at one point. Jason Hirsh (3-7, 5.21) will look to turn his club’s fortunes around as he kicks off a three-game series with New York on Monday night. After starting the season, 2-2 with a 3.82 ERA in his first six starts, the 25-year-old has won just once over 10 outings (1-5) while sporting an earned run average of 6.12. Hirsh has faced the Mets just once in his career and that came last year as a member of the Houston Astros when he allowed three runs – one earned – over six innings of a 4-2 loss.
