Glavine Shines In Rain-Soaked, 2-0, Win Over Cardinals
by: Michael Avallone | Staff Columnist - NY Sports Day | Thursday, June 28, 2007

Tom Glavine got some unusual help as he continued his march towards history on Wednesday night.

And his teammates had little to do with it.

Glavine allowed one hit over six shutout innings before heavy rain forced a delay and ultimately, a cancellation, giving the Mets a rain-shortened, 2-0 victory over the Cardinals at Shea Stadium in a game that was called after the top of the sixth.

David Wright’s two-run homer in the first was all the offense Glavine (7-5) needed on his way to career win No. 297 and the 20th of his career against St. Louis.

Redbirds starter Anthony Reyes lost his 10th straight decision, joining former Met Anthony Young (0-13) has the only pitchers in major league history to open a season with 10 consecutive losses.

Reyes (0-10) has not won since defeating the Detroit Tigers in Game 1 of the 2006 World Series and is winless in the regular season dating back to Sep. 3, a span of 16 starts.

Although he improved markedly over his previous four starts when he allowed 22 runs over 20 2/3 innings (9.58 ERA), the 25-year-old right-hander fell behind in the first and his club could not recover.

Paul Lo Duca singled with one out and after Carlos Beltran flied out, Wright (1-for-1, HR, 2 RBI) belted his team-leading 13th home run, and first since June 10, for a 2-0 lead.

It would be the only mistake, albeit a costly one, for Reyes, who held New York hitless over his final 4 1/3 innings, walking two and striking out three.

Unfortunately for the young hurler, his offense was unable to do anything against Glavine. The 41-year-old allowed just an infield single to Scott Rolen in the second and two walks and one strikeout to record consecutive wins for the first time since April 12-17.

After surrendering 16 runs and 18 hits in just 8 1/3 innings in losses to the Tigers and Yankees, Glavine has yielded only one run over his last two starts, spanning 14 frames (0.64 ERA).

So Taguchi finished 0-for-3, ending his career-best hitting streak at 18 games.

Although the club continues to scuffle offensively, the Mets (43-33) have won five-of-six as they prepare to end their 10-game homestand on Thursday evening. Orlando Hernandez (3-3, 2.77) will make the start as he tries to deliver his club a series victory over St. Louis. After struggling in consecutive starts against the Dodgers and Yankees, ‘El Duque’ rebounded with seven scoreless innings against the A’s last Saturday, the fourth time in seven starts he’s pitched shutout ball yet he has just a 1-2 record to show for it. The right-hander yielded one run over seven innings against St. Louis in his first start of the season back on April 3.

The slumping Cardinals (34-41) will try and gain a split of their four-game series as they wrap up their visit in the Big Apple. Adam Wainwright (6-6, 4.58) makes his first appearance against the Mets since striking out Carlos Beltran with the bases loaded in the ninth to send his club to the World Series last October. The 25-year-old has allowed two runs or less in seven of his last 10 starts, including an 8-3 victory in his previous outing when he surrendered two runs over six innings against Philadelphia. Wainwright faced New York twice in last year’s regular season as a reliever and allowed four runs and three hits in two innings of work.
