FLUSHING, NY – The Mets family received disturbing news yesterday when SNY broadcaster Gary Cohen was rushed to the hospital with an appendicitis right before he was set to call the nightcap of the doubleheader against the San Francisco Giants.
Cohen - who is his 18th year with the Mets and first doing TV broadcasts - was at Shea Stadium preparing for the game and attended all the pre-game interview sessions, but after coming out of the men’s room, one witness said he was in “bad shape” and complained about pains in his side. An ambulance was called to rush him to an undisclosed hospital.
No further information was released.
Mets radio voice, Howie Rose, pinch hit for his former partner on SNY, while Ed Coleman slotted into Rose’s chair on WFAN.
It’s not known how much time Cohen will miss, nor if Rose will be the permanent fill-in until the broadcaster is healthy enough to return.
