NEW YORK – This year will be the 20 anniversary of the last Met championship. Plenty of ceremonies and retrospectives are planned to celebrate.
And former Mets’ slugger Darryl Strawberry plans to be a part of it.
“I will be at quite a few of them,” Strawberry who still leads the team all-time with 252 home runs, said at the Mets Caravan last Thursday. “It’s always good to be at those things when you are with an organization for so many years. It’s great to be back.”
His primary role will still be minor league instructor, which he considers very rewarding. But being back with his first organization seems to have made Strawberry more at peace with himself.
About his teammates, Strawberry said, “I am close to all the guys and they always have special places in my heart because what we accomplished together.”
And that includes teammate Doc Gooden, who seems to still be going through the same issues as Strawberry endured a few years ago.
“I spoke to Doc about two weeks ago with in New Jersey and he’s doing better,” the former slugger said and added he hopes the fans are excited as well.
With all his well documented drug and legal problems seemingly behind him, Strawberry, who will turn 44 in March, just wants to enjoy life has no plans on taking on more responsibilities in his new career.
“I will never manage and I will never coach,” he said emphatically. “I am a person who wants to give back and help younger players. I am not in it for the long haul to be a coach or a manager. I enjoy the kids and I don’t really worry about the other parts.”
