No Comeback in Philly
by: Brian Bohl | Senior Writer - NY Sports Day | Tuesday, March 18, 2008
In one afternoon, Aaron Garcia experienced two familiar sensations that have marked his career the past three seasons. The Dragons quarterback threw six touchdown passes to keep his team competitive against a tough division foe. But Garcia’s performance was capped with yet another injury as the Dragons fell to the Philadelphia Soul, 63-42, at the Wachovia Center.
Garcia needed X-rays after hurting his rib leading a late comeback attempt in the game’s final minute. His status is unconfirmed for the next contest, though any discomfort has been cause for alarm with the Arena Football League veteran. Garcia has appeared in just 13 of the past 35 games because of leg injuries and has been forced to leave two of the three games in which he’s appeared in the current campaign.
Garcia showed he can lead an explosion offense, completing 25 of his 40 passes for 250 yards and zero interceptions. Receiver Kevin Swayne also returned to the lineup after sitting out the previous week’s victory over Kansas City. His sprained left knee appeared healthy, as the former Jets wide out caught three of Garcia’s six touchdowns.
Philadelphia’s Tony Graziani matched Garcia, throwing six touchdowns, including three to Chris Jackson, to improve the Soul to 3-0 in the Eastern Division. The Dragons dropped to 1-2 and will play the Rattlers in Arizona on Friday.
“This is a tough one,” Swayne said on the team’s website. “It was fight. That's the nature of the AFL. It comes down to a few plays, they converted and we didn't.”
Chris Anthony added 10 catches for 91 yards. He couldn’t prevent the Dragons from falling into fourth place behind three undefeated teams. Philadelphia, Dallas and Cleveland still do not have a loss and the Dragons are 0-2 against division opponents.
“To bounce back, we have to scrap the next game,” coach Weylan Harding said to the website. “We have to go home and get healed up. We have to turn it around really quick.”
