Rangers One-Two Punch KO Ducks, 4-3, in OT

After Monday’s listless loss to the Kings, the Rangers were in need of some punch.
And they finally found it in overtime against the Anaheim Ducks. After Aaron Ward took a left cross to the head from Francois Beauchemin at 2:50 of the extra session, Jaromir Jagr punched a one-timer past J.S. Giguere just 19 seconds into the ensuing power play, to give the Blueshirts a 4-3 win. “There is a lot of pressure on the team," said Jagr to reporters in Anaheim. “Everybody thinks we have a lot better team than we had last year, and we're still at .500. We have a lot better players than our record shows. Hopefully, this will give us confidence, but we don't want to be overconfident.” Although Jagr did look like the Hart Trophy Finalist of last season on the victory tally, he did say on the MSG Network afterwards his shoulder was still not up to par. But on that one play, it seemed liked everything was back to normal. It was set up perfectly with Michal Rozsival taking the point and feeding it to Brendan Shanahan and then back to the Rangers captain, who was all set for the one-timer. The game winning goal by Jagr was his 104th of his career, which tied him with Shanahan for fourth on the all time list behind Gordie Howe [121], Phil Esposito [118] and Brett Hull [110]. “Jaromir is in great company, and we're in great company having him and Shanahan as teammates," goaltender Kevin Weekes said to reporters in Anaheim. "Those guys continue to do it every day and every night. They want to continue playing not for any other reason than they love to play. Obviously, those guys have made enough money three and four times over. So that says a lot about the kind of people they are." Shanahan was also involved with two of other three Ranger scores on the night. He scored his 11 goal of the season at 5:17 of the second to put the Blueshirts ahead 2-1. He was also able to assist on Petr Prucha’s game tying goal early in the third. Even though the Rangers big men made their marks, make no mistake, this was a team effort. All four lines skated well in this game and production came from unlikely sources. Blair Betts had a beautiful coast to coast move with a little over three minutes left in the first to knot the game up at one after Teemu Selanne - ending his 10 game goal drought - opened the scoring at the 6:30 mark. It was also the much maligned Blueshirts on the blueline that performed better. Rozsival set up the game winner and Karel Rachunek had three shots on the net, including a setup by Jagr a few minutes before the victory score that was stopped by Giguere [30 saves]. He a plus 1 for the game. More importantly, though, was the play of Weekes, with 30 saves on the night and was helped out by a penalty kill unit that shut down the six Duck power plays. Matt Cullen, who assisted on Prucha’s goal, and Ryan Hollweg also skated well during the game. And although Marek Malik had two bad turnovers in the second, which allowed both Chris Pronger and Ryan Getzlaf to score unassisted, Prucha and Shanahan were able to get his back and tie the game in the third. “It's nice to see your team rally around any individual who has a tough set of circumstances, and we did that," Rangers coach Tom Renney said to reporters. And it was also nice to see the Rangers take a punch on Monday and then come back last night. More on the Rangers from Joe McDonald at www.undertheblues.com.
