Clippers Season Comes to a Close
by: the Richmond Braves | Press Release | Monday, September 13, 2004
RICHMOND, VA—Kyle Davies and two relievers combined on a three-hitter as the Richmond Braves defeated the Columbus Clippers 4-1 at The Diamond Monday to win the fifth and decisive game of the International League Governors' Cup Playoff Semifinals. Richmond will face Buffalo in the best of five championship series beginning Tuesday at Dunn Tire Park in New York. Making just his second Triple-A start, Davies (1-0) held Columbus to one run on two hits and two walks over 5.1 innings. The Clippers plated their lone run on Robinson Cano's RBI single in the second inning. Davies retired 10 consecutive Clippers following Cano's single before walking Homer Bush with one out in the sixth. John Rodriguez singled Bush to third base before Buddy Hernandez entered the game to strikeout Andy Phillips and induce a flyout from Jason Giambi. Hernandez worked 2.2 frames of one-hit baseball, exiting the game with a 4-1 lead in the ninth. Matt Whiteside pitched the ninth to record his second save of the series. Pete Orr led the Braves at the plate collecting three hits and scoring a run. Ryan Langerhans drove in a pair of runs while Luis Lopez and Damon Hollins each plated scores for the Braves. Langerhans got the onslaught started with a third inning sacrifice fly and was followed by a Lopez' RBI double. Langerhans plated his second run on a RBI double in the fifth. Lance Davis (0-1) took the loss for the Clippers surrendering three runs over 4.1 innings. Richmond travels to Buffalo Tuesday to begin a best of five series at Dunn Tire Park. Game one of the series is slated for a 6:05 p.m. first pitch and can be heard on WXGI AM 950 beginning at 5:50 p.m.
