Suns Season Ends As Kannapolis Wins Championship
by: Joe McDonald | Publisher and Editor-in-Chief | Saturday, September 17, 2005
The Hagerstown Suns’ season ended last night as the Kannapolis Intimidators shut out the Mets affiliate 3-0 behind two New York area pitchers, Jack Egbert and Garry Bakker.
Egbert got the start and battled severe shoulder soreness all night to hold the Suns to just four hits in six innings while walking one and striking out five. Egbert got the win. Bakker came on in the seventh and pitched three innings of two hit, no run, four strikeout baseball for his second save of the post season.
Kannapolis got out of trouble early in the first when Jose Coronado reached on a slap single to left. A botched double play and error on McCarthy allowed Concepcion to take two bases pushing Coronado to third. With just one down Grant Psomas hit a ground ball to third. Boomer Berry fielded and threw to the plate cutting down Coronado for out number two. Russ Triplett came up next singling to right. Concepcion raced around third, but a line throw from Bernie Gonzalez in right caught the speedy center fielder at the plate to end the inning.
The Intimidators scored when McCarthy hit a one out double in the third. Berry singled him home to give K-town a 1-0 lead. McCarthy hit his two run bomb to left with an out in the fifth.
Blake Eager pitched well yielding just three runs in six innings taking the loss for Hagerstown which battled back from a 1-0 series hole in the divisional round to beat heavily favored Delmarva.
Kannapolis takes home the first league title for either the Intimidators (’01-present) or the Piedmont Phillies/Bollweevils (’95-’00). The Intimidators donned SAL Champion t-shirts after the ball game and spent time signing autographs and greeting fans before racing back to the clubhouse to celebrate as a team.
