NY METS EXTEND AGREEMENT WITH BINGHAMTON
by: the Binghamton Mets | Press Release | Saturday, September 11, 2004
The successful partnership between the New York and Binghamton Mets will continue with the extension of the Player Development Contract (PDC) between the two clubs. As part of the PDC, New York will supply the B-Mets with players and field staff for at least two more seasons. New York originally owned the Binghamton Mets, re-locating the Williamsport (PA) team to the Southern Tier prior to the 1992 season. Even after a group of local owners bought the team in 1994, New York has renewed its affiliation with the B-Mets citing Binghamton as a positive environment for developing future big leaguers. “We’re thrilled with the renewal of our contract with the New York Mets,” said team president Mike Urda. “Our fans have enjoyed watching future New York Mets play at NYSEG Stadium and following former B-Mets at the major league level.” Close to 100 B-Mets alumni have reached the big leagues in the franchise’s 13-year history. This season, three players (Heath Bell, Jeff Keppinger & David Wright) played in B-Mets uniforms before progressing to the big club. Binghamton’s geographical proximity to New York has allowed the Mets to dip into the B-Mets player pool for emergency back-up as was the case with outfielder Wayne Lydon earlier this year. “We’re extremely comfortable with Binghamton as a spot conducive to developing our minor league players into big leaguers,” said NY Mets Director of Minor League Operations Kevin Morgan, a former B-Mets infielder. “The stadium and playing surface are exceptional, plus the ownership and front office staff have always been supportive.”
