Beckham Is The New ‘Spice’ For MLS

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – A soccer game was played at played at the Meadowlands on Saturday night, although the venue could have resembled a circus. The Red Bulls, yet another New York-based team which occupies space off Route 3, provided the ultimate climax to a game that attracted 66,237 fans, as Juan Pablo Angel’s goal in the 88th minute stunned the L.A. Galaxy, 5-4. But, while the victory –worth a very important three points in the standings- sent the record-setting crowd home with a smile, they was just as grateful to witness David Beckham’s first East Coast appearance.

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - For one night at Giants Stadium, David Beckham’s star power arguably made the New York Red Bulls- Los Angeles Galaxy soccer match the hottest ticket in town. If Major League Soccer could get a rabid crowd, nine total goals and the largest crowd in the 12-year history of the league to show up for every game at Giants Stadium, then Beckham may be worth his yearly 5.5 million dollar salary. His trademark specialty free kicks set up two early Galaxy goals but in a wild back and forth affair, the Red Bulls received a 88th minute second half goal from their new star, Juan Pablo Angel, who scored his second of the game, to give New York a 5-4 victory last night.
