CENTRAL ISLIP, NY – It was supposed to be a happy time for Jim Burt, Jr. Recently married and on his honeymoon in January, the Met farmhand was going to begin his third professional season. But something happened at Port St. Lucie. The 25 year-old was released. “I knew it was coming,” Burt said. “It was tough for me to get an opportunity in that organization because they have so many players. I knew it was a possibility, so no hard feelings.” Because Burt wanted to continue with his career and after looking around for a week, the son of former Giants Pro-Bowler Jim Burt, Sr. inked a deal with the Somerset Patriots to stay close to home and keep his options open.

The Hagerstown Suns’ season ended last night as the Kannapolis Intimidators shut out the Mets affiliate 3-0 behind two New York area pitchers, Jack Egbert and Garry Bakker. Egbert got the start and battled severe shoulder soreness all night to hold the Suns to just four hits in six innings while walking one and striking out five. Egbert got the win. Bakker came on in the seventh and pitched three innings of two hit, no run, four strikeout baseball for his second save of the post season. Kannapolis got out of trouble early in the first when Jose Coronado reached on a slap single to left. A botched double play and error on McCarthy allowed Concepcion to take two bases pushing Coronado to third.
